DOES ALCOHOL CAUSE ANXIETY?

A cocktail mix of stress, anxiety, rapid heart rate and an experience of restlessness.

There's a new buzzword on the market that describes the individual symptoms of hangover and anxiety you may experience the morning after a night of heavy drinking. And yes, there is a scientific reason why many of you can go through this worst kind of hangover. Alcohol, according to experts, slows down the functioning of our brain by affecting the neurotransmitters that are responsible for regulating our moods and feelings. Alcohol can also disrupt sleep, leading to irritability, nausea and feeling groggy. Individuals who already suffer from anxiety depression or other mental health disorders and drink alcohol to cope with their emotions may experience a gradual worsening of symptoms.

IMPACT OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION- Over the past 3 decades, India has seen a significant increase in alcohol consumption. This increase is mostly due to increasing urbanization, better access to advertising and the acceptance of alcohol consumption in our culture.

Individuals consume alcohol for several reasons such as social norms, positive past experiences with alcohol consumption, peer pressure, curiosity to try something new, have fun, deal with daily stress, overcome inhibitions, feel free, etc. Under the influence of alcohol, an individual can experience a sense of euphoria and may become more talkative and sociable, which is often considered a plus because the individual may feel that their best self is being exposed. This type of euphoria is felt due to the enhancement of a chemical known as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which has a relaxing effect.

Alcohol is a type of sedative that helps people relax for a short period of time that wears off quickly. As mentioned earlier, it is important to remember that alcohol has a massive effect on various chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin that change due to excessive drinking and can completely change how the human body reacts in everyday situations.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALCOHOL AND ANXIETY To understand the relationship between alcohol and anxiety, let's first understand what anxiety is. Anxiety is a feeling of dread or fear about what is going to happen. These are mental and physiological states of expecting negative results. When in this state of anxiety, the individual experiences an increased level of arousal and feels tormented by worry, which leads to an anxious pattern of worry. It leads to going into survival mode, which activates the body's system to respond to unknown danger, whether perceived or real.

Anticipating bad results, the individual may experience nervousness and a rapid heartbeat as the body feels discomfort. In a state of anxiety, the individual's attention is focused on making certain changes to protect something they care about. It is very natural to feel anxious because in some situations it can make a person productive and save the day.
